I know it's a bad sign when I keep forgetting the name of the game. Slam Jump was recently featured in the "games we love" section of the app store. I really don't understand why, or what editor thought this was a game that they "loved."
First of all the music is ear-bleedingly loud. If you turn off the music, it turns off the sound for the whole game, too, and there's no way to change it back unless you exit out of the game and go back to the menu. There's also tons of glitches where my character got stuck in mid air.
The actual core gameplay of jumping up and then pressing the screen again to attack is actually kind of fun, just like it is with Divekick. However, the A.I. bad. Really, really bad. They mostly just stand there and don't do anything until you do something yourself. Then they go and ruin it even more with a bad monetization system.
You can spend real money on upgrading your jump height, damage, and health. It's way too simple to be interesting. You can earn in-game currency for these upgrades by winning in the tournament mode, or by beating bots in the horribly boring practice mode. However, the upgrade costs ramp up way too quickly, and soon you'll find yourself in a spot where not only is your next tournament opponent impossible to beat with your current stats, but it will take ages to upgrade without paying. You can go to a "training" mode that's basically a timer system where you can't use your character for a few hours and in return you get a tiny upgrade on your stats.
Oh, and also, there are ads that pop up randomly, and there is no option to pay to remove them.
You can also unlock new characters, but I found the characters very uninteresting-they're the same characters you beat in the tournament mode, who also show up in each tournament ladder over and over again.
Slam Jump is free to play, so you can always download it and try it for yourself. Personally, I don't recommend this game.
