PSA: Your Games Are Not Hacking Your Phone to Mine Cryptocurrency (Probably)

I’ve seen a lot of news, reports, and worried users on reddit talk about the possibility of games hijacking their phones and using them to mine cryptocurrency.  Of course, there are thousands of apps and games being uploaded to the app store every day.  But unless you really go digging, most of the ones that end up on your phone are at least glanced at by the vaunted app store editors.  Could it happen?  Sure, anything’s possible.

But I don’t think I’m too worried about it.

I see a lot of people worried because their game is using a ton of CPU and their phone is heating up.  Let’s talk about the most likely possibility here, though- either the game is poorly optimized, or it simply uses that much CPU to run.  I’ve noticed even apparently simple idle games will start to heat up my phone once you get into the later stages and the game is making a ton of calculations.

The point is, if a game seems to be taking up a lot of CPU, don’t panic!!
